Breast milk is sweetened naturally, so human bodies are programmed to need a certain amount of sweetness for the metabolic process to work properly. As babies are born with this inclination, they will not drink anything that doesn’t have a good taste.

In Europe, they discovered ways to make formula sweet without relying on the flavourings American companies tend to use. This includes:

• Maltodextrin – Maltodextrin is a complex carbohydrate that quickly moves through your digestive system and is healthy in relatively small doses. Holle formula, for instance, includes this in its ingredients as a sweetener.
• Lactose: Lactose is often referred to as Milk Sugar as it is only found inside milk. This provides a baby with the carbohydrates they need. However, this is one to avoid if there’s any relatives in your family who suffer from intolerances to lactose. Hipp formula includes this a sweetener.
