There’s been a growing trend of parents, even those based in the USA, going out of their way to invest in organic baby formula over using those available at home. Why is that? In the following post we look at some of the main reasons why organic baby formula like those available from Holle and Hipp.
Europeans Do Farming Differently
In Europe, they practice farming known as Biodynamic organic farming. This is kind of like standard organic farming, but juiced-up to the max. Each part of the farm ecosystem is taken into consideration and managed including the soil, the seeds, the plants, the animals and humans. They do not use any chemical-based fertilisers or pesticides with the soil and their crops. They rely on the natural and eco-friendly fertiliser known as manure/poop. Furthermore, animals and plants are not genetically modified in any shape or form and many processing ingredients and practices are illegal.
You may wonder though, how that relates to baby formulas from Europe. As formulas are inspired by cow’s milk, when cows are fed on good quality grass, they produce great grass, which in turn means that great baby formula milk is developed. A good sign that a European baby formula brand is genuine is that it has the Demeter label on it.
Avoidance of Certain Ingredients
In Europe baby formula produces, unlike in the US, are not allowed to use ingredients such as carrageenan, table sugar, fructose, glucose or even corn syrup. Although baby formula needs to be sweet. Breast milk is sweetened naturally, so human bodies are programmed to need a certain amount of sweetness for the metabolic process to work properly. As babies are born with this inclination, they will not drink anything that doesn’t have a good taste.
In Europe, they discovered ways to make formula sweet without relying on the flavourings American companies tend to use. This includes:
- Maltodextrin – Maltodextrin is a complex carbohydrate that quickly moves through your digestive system and is healthy in relatively small doses. Holle formula, for instance, includes this in its ingredients as a sweetener.
- Lactose: Lactose is often referred to as Milk Sugar as it is only found inside milk. This provides a baby with the carbohydrates they need. However, this is one to avoid if there’s any relatives in your family who suffer from intolerances to lactose. Hipp formula includes this a sweetener.
Focus on A Balanced and Healthy Digestive System
A large percentage of formula from the US and other places does not have pro and prebiotics. These are important for a balanced and healthy digestive system, which is especially vital for babies. As they’ve only just used organs only months ago.
Hipp, use these in many of their baby formulas and they help to prevent babies from suffering from diarrhoea or even chronic constipation.
So, if you’re trying to decide which kind of baby formula to give your little one, can you see why it makes sense to look to those available in Europe?
