6 Essential Things Every New Mother Should Having

2

Photo via Ginny Washburne

When you are a new mother, it can feel like you don’t know what to do. I should know. When I first had my kids, it was a massive learning curve. After all, nobody ever tells you what raising kids entails. You just assume that it will be easy when you get the hang of it. Well, the bad news is that it doesn’t get any easier than it is now. How you cope with your new responsibility changes, though, and you will find it manageable. It might feel as though you can’t cope just now, but you can. I wanted to share a few motherhood insights with you so here they are. Here are six essential things that you need to get.

#1 Weatherproofing gadgets

Pretty soon, you will want to take your baby out with you. The first time you take your kid out, you might feel that it is a massive effort. If it starts to rain, you might not know what to do. Having little things, like the Bugaboo Raincover could make a massive difference. That way, you can make sure that you are ready if the heavens open up and it starts raining. Don’t panic, you will get used to it before you know it.

#2 A diaper dispenser

When you start to change your kid’s diaper, it can feel like a bit of a rush. Yes, you have to do it all as fast as possible. That means that the best thing you can do is have somewhere clean to put your dirty diapers. You might think that a trash can will do the job, but a dispenser is much better than that. You can get one online or at the mall. Get one as soon as possible to save yourself trouble later on.

#3 Childproof locks

When your little one starts to crawl, you are going to have a nightmare. There are loads of dangers around your home, and so you need to childproof it as soon as you get a chance. You can get little child-proof locks that you can use to keep your drawers as safe as possible. That way, if your child tries to get into the knife drawer, you can make sure that they won’t succeed. Easy!

#4 Loads of baby clothes

Okay, here is the truth of the matter – babies are messy all the time. Not a day goes by when a baby doesn’t soil their clothes. The more baby clothes you have, the easier you will find it to stay on top of things. That way, you will find that it is super easy to keep your baby as clean as possible. Remember, babies have low immunity, which means that you need to keep them away from germs.

#5 A secure cot

There are loads of cots on the market. You might not know how to choose the right cot for your baby so let me help you along the way. You need to make sure that the cot you choose has high barriers. That way, you should have no trouble when it comes to keeping your baby safe. The best material for cots has to be wood as it is safe and won’t hurt them.

#6 Entertainment for your baby

You might think that newborns don’t need entertainment, but they do. You need to make sure that you have little toys and things for your child to enjoy. For example, you could get a mobile to go above your baby’s cot. These little touches will make a world of difference to your child, and so they are well worth getting.

The most important thing you need to remember is not to panic. Perfecting your parenting skills will come with time, and so you needn’t worry. Take it from me – you can do it!

The Ultimate Summer Fruit Ice-cream Recipe

Summer is my favorite season! Plenty of fruits, warm weather, beach time and a lot of tanning. Not mentioning that kids love it too, but mostly because it is the holiday time which means no school and no homework. As a mom, summer time does not mean more free time or more quiet moments. So, it usually means yelling, laughter and your kids` friends coming over. But as any mom, you cannot but not love them. Despite all the moments when you just want to lock yourself in the pantry and pretend you are not in the house. I will leave that conversation for another time though. This time I am going to talk about the best ice cream recipe made with summer fruits. It is easy to make, it has a lot of nutrients, and it is the perfect dessert for your kids and their friends. You will need the following ingredients:

  • Summer Fruits : blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackcurrants, and redcurrants. Of course you can add other types of fruits as well if you wish.
  • Two tablespoons of organic honey. Make sure it is runny.
  • Ice
  • Handful of nuts (your choice, also optional)

All you have to do is mix the fruits, nuts, honey and ice in a blender or food processor until the mixture is smooth. Place the mixture in a freezer proof container and leave it for a couple of hours or until frozen. Take it out and put it in the food processor or blender again to remove any hard ice bits. Place back in the freezer for another hour or two and then scoop it into a bowl when ready to eat. It can be garnished with more summer fruits or mint.

Summer fruits are a great add to your menu during the summer time. If you are a fan of gardening, having a few fruit bushes in your garden could  save you a lot of money. It would also allow you to enjoy the sweet taste of summer fruits any time you want. Whether you prefer raspberries, strawberries, or you want to look for blackcurrant bushes for sale online, having at least one of them in your garden would be great. But, if you are a busy mom, it may be easier just to buy them from a supermarket.

No matter where you get your summer fruits from, you can always mix them into delicious and easy to make desserts. This will make you the favorite mom among your kids` friends. And not only that, but you will also ‘trick’ your kids into eating their daily serving of fruit with this delicious ice cream recipe. To be a revolution mom, you need the right ‘weapons’ in the fight against unhealthy crisps and sweets. Although your kids most likely prefer them over fruits. But not anymore, the ultimate ice cream recipe is here. It is easy, healthy and a great way to keep your kids` cravings for sugary foods and drinks in check. Be a smart mom, be a revolution mom!

How to Make Moving Home with Little Ones Less Stressful

1

brownpau

Moving home is an emotional process. Even though you might be excited to explore a new house and neighborhood, many people also name it as one of the most stressful things you can do. It can be even more complicated when you have children, especially when they’re young kids who you need to watch all the time. Trying to organize everything to go off without a hitch is hard when you have little ones to supervise, and even harder if you’re a single parent or your partner can’t be there. If you need to move house with small children, use this guide to make the whole process easier.

Preparing Them for the Move

Depending on the age of your kids, they might not know what’s going on. But they’re likely to know that something is happening, even if they don’t know what it is. Getting them ready for the move could be super easy, or it could be a bit more of a struggle. If they’re a bit older, they might already have a few friends, a pre-school they love and attachment to the house. Explaining that you’ll be moving somewhere else, even if only the house will change, might give them a bit of a shock. You can get them involved in moving from the beginning, by taking them to see the new house and letting them pick out a room. Explain everything that will happen, from packing everything up to finding a new park to play at.

Getting Organized

Organizing a big move is difficult at the best of times, but even more of a trial when you have kids running around. To help you stay on track, you could create a list of things to do and a schedule for when you need to do them. It’s best to try and get as much help as you can get, whether it’s from professional movers or family. You can hire a truck to drive yourself. But it could be easier to employ movers like American Home Movers at http://www.americanhomemovers.com. Having other people to load and unload things into the truck means you have more time to watch the kids and supervise the move.

One the Big Day

When the day comes to move, you have to make a decision about whether the kids are going to be around. If you think it might be easier for them to be out of the way, try to get someone to watch them while the house is packed up. Of course, some parents might not have any choice. If you have to have the kids around, you can still make the move painless by keeping them occupied. If they’re old enough, give them a job to do. You could even make them a badge with their role, making them Chief Toy Packer or Truck Supervisor.

Eventually, you’ll arrive at your new home. Let the kids unpack their rooms first so they can start to settle in. It won’t be long before it will be like you’ve always lived there.

Revamp Your Child’s Room With These Awesome Decorating Ideas

One of the main reasons for not investing in an expensive nursery is that it won’t be long before baby grows up. And when they grow, they are likely to want to redecorate. Quite possibly with a pen, paints and other substances I don’t want to think about plastered all over the walls when you aren’t looking.

It’s at this point that you probably want think about giving their room a makeover. But, having been stung before, how can you make their room nice, but safe from their artistic desires? This little guide should help.

Get Them Involved

All children draw on walls – it’s an essential part of their development. However, getting them involved with decorating can help them to understand the differences between a nice room and some random scribbles. It’s important to put them at the heart of the process. Take them with you when you are looking for new furniture, or ask them what colours they like. By giving them ownership, you are also giving them responsibility. Hopefully, they will embrace it!

Painting Or Wallpaper?

The choice of paint or paper all depends on how old your child is when you redecorate. There is little point in splashing out on another expensive roll of paper if you suspect their graffiti days aren’t quite over. Paint is probably the better choice of the two, as they can help you when it is time to get the brushes out. They will also be fascinated by the choice of colours – although some helpful guidance may be needed here!

Lighting

Lighting tends to be forgotten when theming and designing a child’s new room. This is odd because the right brightness in the right places can give it such a lift. Think about dimmer switches, too, especially if your child struggles with the dark. If you live in a warm home, think about installing a fan alongside your lights to keep your little one cool during the summer. Kichler light fixtures could be a good idea here. Some of them they come with inbuilt fans and their designs will still look nice as your child grows up and, inevitably, paints the walls black when they hit their teenage years.

Wall Stickers

There is a huge range of amazing wall stickers that are every exciting for young children. You can stick up trees for a forest effect, or even go for a group of animals that will, without a doubt, be a source for many imaginary games. Stencils are another good idea and it will be a lot of fun painting over them with the little ones. You never know, you might have the next Banksy on your hands.

Storage

And now, the boring bit. Storage is so important, and without it, all your lovely work will be ruined in a single rainy afternoon. Go for bright colours or animal shapes to try and entice your child into the art of tidying. The earlier you encourage tidiness, the less work there will be for you in the future, and the more relaxed your home environment will be.

Have a great time redecorating your child’s room with them!

Essential Home Security Advice For Keeping Your Family Safe

When it comes to keeping your family home safe and secure, you should spare no expense. The last thing you want is to come home from a night out to find that someone had broken in and stolen all your valuables. Luckily, there is some fantastic technology around these days that could help to make sure that never happens. To give you a helping hand, we’re going to mention some of the most vital steps you need to take on this page. We hope that publishing the information will mean more people take the right precautions. After all, it’s only your family that will suffer if you fail to take heed.

  • Get a good alarm

The very first thing you need to do is head out and get a good house alarm. Ideally, you should aim to spend a few hundred dollars to ensure you are getting a premium product. You should also ensure the alarm you select comes with an array of motion sensors. That will mean nothing can move in your house without it going off. If you have dogs and cats at home, you will have to get used to putting them in an area of the property that your sensors can’t see. Otherwise, your neighbors are sure to make some complaints.

  • Consider CCTV

CCTV around the exterior of your property should help to capture any illegal behavior on tape. That is handy if a criminal manages to get inside your home because you will have HD video of their actions. That will help to make the police’s lives easier when it comes to finding the person and bringing them before the courts.

  • Take self-defense classes

Nobody wants to think about what might happen if a criminal breaks into their home while they are in bed. However, the last thing you want is to expose your children to such danger. So, taking some self-defense classes could be a good idea. Just make sure you have all the best self-defense products in your bedroom so that you are ready to jump into action if anything untoward happens.

  • Install a floodlight response system

Even if you worked hard on making sure you selected the right property in the best location, you are still vulnerable to criminals. Installing a sensor floodlight system in your garden could be a wise move. It will illuminate any criminals if they try to get into your home without permission. That is usually enough to scare them away. However, it will also help the authorities to secure a conviction because you will get a much clearer image of the culprit on your CCTV.

We are confident your home will be as secure as possible if you follow all those tips. Most families never have to worry about burglars getting into their home, but sod’s law suggests it will happen to those who failed to prepare. So, now is the best time to head out and purchase some high-end security devices. To make savings, you should check online auction websites. However, it’s best to get your items from a reputable firm. That way, someone else will almost certainly deal with the installations.

Spending quality time together is crucial, and by creating a bucket list you make sure that time is the best it can possibly be! Go Hiking

If you’ve never been hiking with your kids, you’re definitely missing out on a special experience. Hiking helps you all to get a little exercise, while take in the beauty of nature. You can teach them about flowers, plants, creepy crawlies and more. Buy a book of walks or find a walk online that you can all take. There are even games you can play along the way.

Camp Out

Even if you just camp out in your back garden, camping out is a great experience for your kids to have. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, go away as a family for the weekend to a camping site. You’ll all be able to bond much better as a family, mainly because you’re in the wild with no distractions. There’s nothing quite like getting back to nature!

Go to a Theme Park

Theme parks are one of the most fun days out for the family you can have. Each one has their own unique rides and attractions, so do your research first and see what’s appropriate for all of you. You could put multiple parks on the list if you really wanted!

Here’s How I Protect My Kids When They Go On The Internet

The World Wide Web is an excellent resource of billions of people around the world. When you need to find out information about something, you have a wealth of data at your fingertips. Unfortunately, the Internet can also be a dark place. Adult “entertainment” websites are easy to access online. And we all know that can spell bad news when children can access them.

In today’s modern world, it is necessary for parents to put measures or controls in place to filter the content their kids can see. If you are worried about what your child might be watching online, check out these examples I use with my own children:

Have your ISP filter website access

Although not a foolproof method of protection, you can have your ISP enable Internet content filters. In the UK, BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media all offer free parental controls that get enabled on their equipment.

That means anyone in your home cannot circumvent those filters. At least, not unless they somehow contact your ISP and get them to disable the protection! The only downside to this approach is some “clean” websites might get blocked by mistake. If that happens, you can ask your ISP to whitelist the site so that it doesn’t get blocked in future.

Enable content filtering on your router

Another option at your disposal is to enable content filtering on your router. When you access your router’s admin, you can find those options under a section like “Parental Controls.”

You can fine-tune the settings so that some known website URLs can get blocked. You just need to make sure that your kids don’t know how to access the router’s admin system, or find out what the login details are.6

One of my friends has a son that managed to do this. Things got somewhat extreme in his case as he had an obvious addition to “adult content.” The good news is places like Mt Pleasant Academy can help kids to overcome such addictions.

Enable parental controls on your devices

It’s likely you will have a plethora of devices in your home like computers, smartphones and tablets. Even today’s modern TVs have built-in web browsers! You will be pleased to know that all devices have settings where you can enable parental controls.

Put simply, they filter websites by particular words and phrases used in the URL. If you do this in addition to the other filtering tools at your disposal, you’ll have a high chance of blocking out any dodgy websites.

Use MAC filtering on your router

Last, but not least, here’s a tip for the geeky parents among us! Each device, regardless of what it is, has something called a MAC (Media Access Control) “address.” In a nutshell, it’s a unique reference ID, kind of like a serial number.

You can ensure that only devices with particular MAC addresses can get used on your Wi-Fi and network connections. That way, you can control and filter what sites your children visit on the Web.

By following the above tips and tricks, you can ensure that you’ve done your best when it comes to the online safety of your children.

How To Plan A Family Break On A Tight Budget

If, like me, money is tight, but you still love the idea of taking your little monsters away on vacation. The idea of not being able to do so because of the cost can be an upsetting prospect.

Like all parents, the idea of being able to get away and spend some quality time with the little ones is important. I don’t want them to miss out just because I’m strapped for cash. But with little spare money is it even possible to go on holiday?

Believe it or not, if you shop around and opt for a budget break, booking a family holiday doesn’t have to break the bank. Even with a small amount of cash to spend, it is still possible to get away and take the little ones on a fantastic family holiday.

Below, I have put together a handy guide to all the best budget holiday tips that I rely on to book a family break without blowing my budget.

Work out your budget

The first thing to do is to sit down and work out your overall trip budget – aka, how much you can afford to spend. Once you know how much you have to play with, you can then start looking at the best options.

Once you have set a budget, divide it into two parts – one part for the holiday itself and one part for spending money while you are away. Aim to save at least half of your budget for spending money – this will cover the cost of your food, activities and days out while you are away.

Research your options

Once you know how much you have to spend, you can begin researching your options. Use the internet to look for destinations that are not only family-friendly but that are also cheap.

Spain, Greece and France are all ideal budget holiday destinations or as they are relatively close to home and don’t cost too much to travel to.

To get an idea of the best hotel deals available, have a look online at holiday comparison sites and discount travel websites. Keep an eye out for any all inclusive holiday deals within your price range, as these are fantastic for saving money.

Plan your break for a cheap time

Whether you are heading to France for the weekend or are off to Spain for a two-week break, you can save yourself money by planning your trip during off-peak times.

The school holidays are, of course, when travel is most expensive. However, if you plan your break in advance or at the last minute, you may be able to get some fantastic travel deals. Regardless of when in the season you are travelling, aim to fly during the week instead of on a weekend as weekday flights tend to be cheaper.

Pick your accommodation carefully

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that hotel’s are too expensive for your budget. Sometimes booking an all inclusive hotel and flight deal can work out cheaper than booking self-catered accommodation.

To find the best accommodation deals, have a look online and shop around at different sites and travel companies. Sometimes the best travel deals can be found at the travel agents, so don’t forget to pop into your local travel store.

Where do You Start When Preparing for Your First Child?

Waiting for the arrival of your first child is a very exciting time, but it’s also a very nervous time. Everyone says it, but it really is life changing. Once that baby arrives, nothing in your life will be the same again. But that’s not a bad thing! There is a lot of preparation to do before the due date though.

It’s not just you that needs to be prepared; it’s everyone and everything around you too. Some things take time and discussion with your partner, and other things can be solved with minor adjustments to your daily routine. So, here’s where you should start when you’re waiting for your first child to arrive.

Improve Your Health

Once you know you’re pregnant, the first thing to do is improve your health so that you and the baby will get through the pregnancy without any problems. You’re eating for two now, but you need to be eating the right kinds of food for two!

We all know it, but it should still be repeated. You must stop smoking and drinking alcohol as soon as you’re aware of the pregnancy. The harm both can inflict on your baby is not worth it.

Borrow from Friends

There’s a lot of equipment that goes into taking care of a baby, and that can mean a lot of spending. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Id’ always recommend borrowing items from family and friends that they’re no longer using. They’ll usually be happy to give them to you if their children have now grown up. It saves a lot of money and time shopping.

Make the Home Child-Friendly

You’ve probably organised and decorated your home exactly as you like it; that might have to be changed now though. Safety suddenly becomes a lot more important than style when a baby is on the way.

First of all, think about installing smoke alarms if you haven’t already, and add some heater guards. When they start crawling, you’ll have to make sure there are no wires or cords lying around.

Think About How You’ll Raise Your Child

There are thousands of ways in which you can bring up a child, and, of course, we all want the right one for our children. There are a lot of decisions to be made before you arrive at a final decision though.

You and your partner should sit down and discuss it. There are lots of books and guides that can help you, but sometimes it’s best to talk it through first.

Relax

With all that work and preparation piling up, it can be easy to forget to take it easy and relax. There’s no sense in overworking yourself and trying to take on too much at once; that won’t be good for you or the baby.

Let your partner bear some of the burden, you need to spend a bit of time to yourself with your feet up each day! If you do this and the other things mentioned on the list, you’ll have a smooth pregnancy and be fully prepared for the new arrival.

How To Choose The Right Apartment For Your Family

These days, most families can’t afford to buy a property. Yes, there are some government schemes in place to help them on the property ladder. But people need to pay large deposits before getting considered for a mortgage. And that’s what helps them decide to stick with moving to rented homes instead.

If you’ve got a young family in tow, and you want to live near the city, you might be considering living in an apartment. They are cheaper to rent, and are plentiful inside inner-city areas. Today I will share with you some tips on how you can choose the right apartment for your family! Here is how to find the perfect place for your family:

4

Which area do you want to live in?

The first thing to consider is where you and your family want to move. There is an almost endless list of places to consider. I say “almost” because your budget will restrict you to living in some areas only.

I recommend making a shortlist of places that you might want to consider moving to. That way, you’ve got plenty of options when it comes to searching for an apartment.

Do some research on the neighbourhood

Now that you have a list of possible areas to move to, the next stage is to spend some time researching them. For example, is crime a problem? Where are the nearest schools and what are they like? What types of people live in those areas? Are they affluent or home to blue-collar workers?

Apart from doing online research, I also suggest that you do a “drive-by” of each area at various times of the day. While the Internet is a good research source, you shouldn’t 100% rely on the information you read. It’s best to see the neighbourhood for yourself before making any final decisions.

For example, when I moved to a rental apartment, I made sure I checked the area out first. That’s because I wanted my family to live in a safe neighbourhood close to various amenities.

What facilities are on offer?

You might think that when you rent an apartment, all you’re paying for is the apartment. And that you’re also contributing to the upkeep of communal areas.

Some apartment blocks like Ultris Wynnfield Lakes also come with a whole host of features. A few places offer things like fitness centres, kids play areas and so forth. Granted, you might have to pay extra for the privilege of such facilities. But it’s OK if you plan to make good use of them.

Is the apartment well-maintained?

Before you decide to pay a deposit and move in, you need to check the level of maintenance in the apartment. Just because an apartment block might look modern and well-kept on the outside doesn’t mean it is on the inside!

Check with the management company or the landlord what major work got done recently. For example, they might have installed a new central heating system. That way, you can be sure that you won’t need to call them out to fix things all the time.
