What to do when your child damages or loses a tooth

tooth

As they grow up your little ones will be seeking out more and more adventurous activities. They’ll also start eating foods that haven’t received your seal of approval. Both bring with them an increased risk of damaging or losing teeth. Knowing what to do when this happens could mean the difference between rescuing your child’s tooth or losing it and it could spare a whole lot of unnecessary pain. Below is some advice from the Cuffley Village Dental Practice.

It’s probably the furthest thing on your mind when you’re outdoors having a good time with your family, but as the summer approaches so too does an increased risk of broken and damaged teeth. Spending more time outdoors, participating in adventure activities and crunching down on hard candies and tough foods could all end up in a chipped, broken or knocked-out tooth.

Dental emergencies don’t keep office hours and finding an emergency dentist can take time, even when you are at home. Taking the right actions and doing so swiftly can help you save the tooth or in the least, minimise unnecessary pain.

1. If it’s a milk tooth, it’s probably fine.

Since milk teeth are destined to fall out eventually, if your child has a milk tooth knocked out, it’s not necessary to have the tooth reinserted. So no need to panic. A lost tooth chart is a handy way of tracking tooth loss and will help you work out which teeth are permanent. But do check for facial fractures and bruising. And remember to dispatch the tooth fairy!

2. Preserve a knocked-out permanent tooth. Then get to the dentist. Fast.

If a permanent tooth gets knocked out at the root there is a good chance a dentist can reinsert it-provided you act quickly: Pick up the tooth by the crown. Do not touch the roots. Gently rinse the tooth and if possible, try to place it back in the socket. Get your child to gently bite down on it. If you can’t put the tooth back in their mouth, keep it in a glass of milk. Get hold of a dentist immediately and bring the tooth along. Ice any bruising.

3. A small chip in a permanent tooth is not an emergency.

If your child has lost a small part of their permanent tooth and it doesn’t hurt, you should be able to make a normal dentists appointment and seek dental treatment once you’re at home. A dentist will usually either smooth the tooth down or add some filling. In the meantime, you could use an emery board to file down any jagged edges that might hurt the tongue, lip or mouth.

4. A fractured permanent tooth requires immediate attention.

A fractured tooth can be extremely painful. When a tooth is cracked, the inside of the tooth is usually damaged and a dentist may be unable to save it. A dentist will need to assess whether the tooth pulp is damaged which would require a root canal treatment. Alternatively, a crown or bridge may be necessary.

While you find an emergency dentist and make your way to their practice, you can protect the sore tooth with gum or some moulded candle wax. Place any broken off fragments in milk.

5. Stay calm.

Whether you’re a child, teen or adult, damaging a tooth can be traumatic. It’s important not to panic and give your child the reassurance that everything is under control: You will get them to an emergency dentist as soon as possible and regardless of the damage, they still have the prospect of a perfect healthy smile ahead of them.

Top 6 Ways to De-stress

How you spend your downtime is vicariously just as important to accomplishing all your jobs and errands as working directly on them. You can’t operate at capacity if you’re not finding time to unwind and replenish properly; excuse the poor analogy but you can’t expect a car to drive long distances without you making stops to fill it with more petrol.

yoga

Light Exercise

The simplest and most obvious one I think, but often overlooked to great detriment. Light exercise can consist of something as achievable and relaxed as a long walk- and if not a scenic recreational walk, perhaps in place of a morning commute. A lot of people won’t realize that if they’re not tiring out their bodies then their sleep isn’t the best quality it could be, and that’ll cause untold amount of stress too! If walks aren’t for you then yoga is a well renowned stress-annihilator, for its gentle exercise and even more so for its heavy focus on meditation.

yoga2

Baths

If your bath is like mine then it’s filled with clothes and talcum powder most of the time, in between my bi-monthly baths. But even finding a day a week to sink into the tub, with some candles around, and either a nice book or a bit of relaxing music, will have you noticeably less tightly wound in no time.

yoga3

Massage

I’m not talking about going out to a spa for a professional rub-down (although there really is no parallel for that if you do find time), I simply advocate getting your partner or a truly good friend to crack out the grapeseed oil and knead out those knots of tension from your poor shoulders every once in a while. To be honest even administering a massage alleviates stress itself, so maybe you can take it in turns, everyone’s a winner!

yoga4

Hypnosis

If you can identify specific causes of stress in your life, like smoking or anger issues, then professional hypnotherapy could be the route for you. Expert hypnosis can not only aid in getting rid of behaviours you’d be better off without, but can change your outlook on worrisome situations, and even just deal directly with removing feelings of stress. And with some of the better clinics now starting to offer webcam therapy sessions, it’s a no-brainer.

yoga5

Music

You can’t have failed to notice that the right music has a massive impact on your mood but, even knowing that, some people still don’t find a moment to just kick back and listen to their favourite album. Have a sing along, have a dance, you’ll be amazed just how cathartic it can be.

yoga6

Disconnect

How do you expect to relax when you’re constantly the victim of a barrage of bleeps and buzzes? Instantly accessible by everyone, anytime. Don’t you remember a time before mobile phones? Before the internet? It was okay right? Nobody mithering you. Whichever of the preceding 5 you choose to combat your stress with, their effectivity is going to increase tenfold if you just fall off the radar for a couple of hours. Phone on silent (or off altogether), no tablet or device, computer or laptop, don’t even turn on the TV. Serene silence. Heaven.

A House For Entertaining

entertainment

Houses are used for many things, mainly to keep a roof over our heads, but when we decide to renovate our homes we need to consider how we are going to use it in order to make it as practical as possible.

For example, if you have young children, providing them with a ‘play room’ might be a practical move with that spare bedroom or if you have pets, something as simple as putting a cat or dog flap in the back door could be worthwhile.

If your home is regularly filled with friends and families and you host a number of parties then you will want to ensure there are parts of your home that are practical for when people come to say hello. For instance, the heart of the home often refers to the kitchen, where you will find you and your friends spend a large chunk of your time chatting and drinking. This will mean the kitchen will need to be practical and durable.

To make it practical but still look great you will need to invest in a flooring that is easy on the eye, durable and easy to clean and there is no better option than kitchen floor tiles. Kitchen floor tiling is hard-wearing and it comes in a number of styles and designs so you can simply install it to suit your existing décor. There is no need to completely change your kitchen by removing units and painting walls, just by adding a flooring that stands out, you can completely transform a room.

If you’re predominantly known for hosting the family barbeques though, you will need to turn your attention outside. The garden can be what turns your great home into an unbelievable one, but is one of the hardest aspects of your home to keep looking beautiful all year round. For parties, it might be advisable to install a patio or decking area for people to sit and enjoy the sun, away from the fumes of the BBQ. Grass looks beautiful when it’s bright green and healthy, but again this is very difficult to keep on top off so the best alternative is artificial grass. With very little maintenance and a guarantee that it will stay green all year round, it is perfect for children, pets and even adults.

Back in the house, and if you and your friends enjoy a little tipple every now and then and are struggling for space for your bottles of wine, a simple and cost-effective way to store them is by using a wine rack. Wine racks come in a lot of shapes and sizes and can add a great feature to your home, even if all it does is hold your copious amounts of red wine. Still, it’s practical and perfect for entertaining.

So, if your home is the headquarters for parties, it could be time to up your game and improve your homes practicality so parties can be easier than ever.

Busy Mums: Cleaning Tips For The Home

Working long hours, cooking, cleaning, running children to and from school and after school activities, occasionally catching up on some sleep, a mum’s life is all go go go! When it comes to cleaning, take a few of these tips from other busy mums and make cleaning your house daunting!

cleaning

  • Be efficient: Mum’s are really good at multi-tasking, use this to your advantage! Incorporate moving around the house with tidying, never leave a room without taking something with you to put away. Keep cleaning equipment throughout the house, so whenever you have a spare second (an advert during your favourite TV programme) you can grab the nearest duster and attack your dining room cabinets! Your dishwasher doesn’t just have to be for dishes, efficiency is everything! Load your dishwasher up with ice dispenser grates, stove knobs and grates and kitchen sponges – this cuts down on the time you spend cleaning. Combine your tasks, take your sponges into the shower with you and wipe it down when you’ve finished!
  • Use your helpers: The majority of your cleaning will be cleaning after your children, and they do say that 3 pairs of hands are better than one! Combine fun and playtime into your cleaning, and get your children interested in helping you. Children-sized vacuum cleaners are a great way to get them enjoying cleaning – with any luck they’ll be asking to vacuum everyday! Set a time limit, say 15 minutes, and have a mad cleaning sweep all around the house including tiled areas. Pull together all the items that need to be put away and start the timer, 15 minutes a day means your house should stay clutter free (the majority of the time!)
  • Tricky places: There are a few tricky places of the house that need a bit of extra time and care to clean, but with a few tips this can easily be sped along. Boiling water in your microwave for 5 to 10 minutes mean it will easily be wiped clean. Putting slices of orange, lemon and lime in the water it will keep your microwave smelling clean and fresh! Use a one-inch painter’s brush to get in all the nooks and crannies of you cabinets, the bristles will loosen up dust so the surfaces can be easily wiped away.

Talk to other mothers about further tricks of the trade, all mums have plenty of their plate and will be happy to share their secrets to make cleaning more effective and more efficient!

Top 5 Things to Consider When Renovating Your Kitchen

kitchen

Renovating your kitchen is the opportunity to create a space for your family that is personal,  practical, and stunning. Here we look at some aspects that should be considered when planning your ideal space.

Clever Planning is Key:

If you are going to invest bucket loads of time, energy and money renovating a kitchen, it is crucial that clever consideration is given to planning the whole project before you start. Regardless of whether you are totally restructuring, or just tweaking a few bits, adding new appliances and replacing tired units, you will still need to give a great deal of thought to the process. The most important factor has to be functionality, as your kitchen needs to be practical. A great principle to work with, is keeping the three most-used areas, the hob, fridge and sink, situated in a triangle shape, with no more than six feet in between them. This immediately maximises usability and convenience, regardless of what shape or size your kitchen is. When planning your kitchen, don’t scrimp on the cupboard and storage space; think creatively, making use of any small, tight spaces, and try to fit cupboards right up to the ceiling, rather than leaving a pointless gap that serves no purpose. Deep drawers are another useful way to maximise storage space. One last major consideration is lighting; this is often overlooked, but is a crucial component of an efficient kitchen. Overhead lighting in a kitchen is often impractical because it can create shadows on the surfaces you are working on. It is a much better idea to include under cabinet spot lights, as these will shine right on to the counter-top; they can also be switched on only where you need them, rather than lighting the whole kitchen, which is energy-efficient. Light bulbs direct do all kinds of spot lights, at a reasonable price. You can buy them from here.

Make it All About You:

The kitchen is often the most integral part of the house; the place where the whole family gathers. Therefore, put your own unique stamp on it. Why not go with a theme, and incorporate it all over the kitchen? This doesn’t need to be anything too elaborate; choosing a colour scheme with coordinated accessories is enough to add your own personal touch. Although kitchens are traditionally quite bare of paintings or photos, it doesn’t have to be that way; filling up your walls with bright canvases and favourite family pictures will allow for a feeling of warmth. Similarly, you may not wish to clutter valuable surface space with decorative items, there is no reason why you can’t find a spot in your newly renovated kitchen for a display; use a simple shelf to show off items you cherish, or your favourite plate collection.

Install Smart Appliances:

Although it might be tempting to cut corners and use your old appliances, this is rarely a good idea; they will simply look out of place in a new kitchen. Go for modern, updated versions, as these smart appliances do what they say on the box by offering innovative ideas that are often far more economical and user-friendly than their predecessors. A great example is a double drawer dishwasher like this one: these fit into the space of a standard dishwasher, yet provide a flexible (each drawer can be run on a separate cycle, at the same time), energy-saving, and practical option.

Another smart appliance rapidly increasing in popularity is a convection oven. Although they have been commonplace in commercial kitchens for some time, they are now taking off for home use. These ovens can reduce cooking time by 25%, with means that meals are conveniently ready much quicker, using less energy.

If you live in a hard water area, then installing a water softening system like this one is a must-have during any kitchen makeover. Hard water causes untold damage to pipes and electrical appliances, and leaves unsightly marks in toilet bowls, and in sinks and baths. Installing a water softener is simple, as most models will fit easily under your kitchen sink. The benefits will be remarkable: energy costs will dramatically reduce, and the efficiency of appliances will be greatly improved. Not only that, but less elbow grease and fewer cleaning products will be needed, as unsightly marks will be a thing of the past.

Keep Your Surfaces Practical:

Give careful consideration to your work surfaces and floors; what might look visually stunning could prove a nightmare to maintain. For example, stainless steel looks amazing, but is easily scratched. Go for a surface that is easy to clean, and takes wear and tear well. Butcher block counter-tops are affordable and relatively low maintenance, and they offer an attractive, yet functional option. Alternatively, you could opt for granite, caesarstone or soapstone which would all add a touch of luxury to your kitchen. When considering your floor surface, again practicality should take priority; try not to be swayed by beautiful floors that will be difficult to clean or maintain, especially with a young family. Whichever you choose, the material should be non-slip, porous and easy to look after.

Put Safety First:

For families with small children, safety in the kitchen is often one of the biggest concerns. Renovating offers the opportunity to re-design the kitchen in a way that is practical and safe. Place your oven at adult height, rather than floor level, to prevent accidents. Use counter-tops that have rounded, rather than sharp, edges, and choose drawers that are soft closing to reduce the likelihood of trapped fingers. It is also a good idea to invest in some cupboards that are lockable, as this will ensure that hazardous products (such as bleach) are secured away from inquisitive hands.

Do you have Grey Hair? Don’t panic, here’s why…..

Grey Hair article

It is a common conception that Grey hair is considered unflattering, can make women look older and give the impression of ‘I don’t care attitude towards her appearance’. For women, greying hair often occurs when they are undergoing significant physical changes, such as the menopause; therefore the need to cover the grey hairs becomes a very emotive issue.  However, anyone can start going grey at a relatively young age but usually grey hairs begin appearing in your mid 20’s developing throughout the next years so that in your 40’s you may have the inclination to cover your grey hair.

It is best to start covering grey hairs as soon as possible so you can’t be tempted to pull a single grey hair out! By succumbing to the urge of pulling out the grey hairs you can traumatise your roots which will either encourage courser and thicker hair to grow or no hair to grow. It is a myth that pulling out one grey hair causes two new ones to grow in its place, however, traumatic alopecia (baldness) is a very common issue that can occur due to the root trauma.

Grey hair naturally has a different texture to non-grey hairs, which makes colouring and styling harder. However, it can be done successfully. One way to hide your greying hair is to style your hair differently to cover the grey hair at your temples, which will create a more flattering look. Don’t be afraid to experiment with a textured fringe or sides just because you have always worn your hair up and away from your face.

If you are inclined to colour your grey hair do you go to a salon or home? Millions of women have had success with colouring their hair at home. Here are 6 golden rules for home colouring:

  • No Peroxide. If you don’t want to damage your hair at all then steer clear of hair colouring products that contain peroxide. Although peroxide is an effective hair lightener it is harmful for your hair. Daniel Field hair colour is the only non-peroxide, non-ammonia permanent hair colour for greying hair.
  • If a hair colouring product containing peroxide claims it has “special conditioners and benefits” you should take it with a pinch of salt. The cosmetic shine created by these colourants is only cosmetic – the shine lasts up to 2 weeks. After the 2 weeks you are left with (to some degree) structurally damaged hair.
  • Don’t go too dark! Be aware that as you get older your skin gets paler – so choose hair colour shades that are no more than one shade darker than your natural hair colour.
  • Be subtle. The idea of colouring your grey hair is to ensure that no one notices, so be subtle with your colouring and stick to shades as close to your natural hair colour base as possible.
  • Grey hair only suits women who have the correct combination skin tone (neutral skin) and eye colouring (grey/blue) and look good in blues, lilacs, greys and pinks.

Choose appropriately to your budget. Full head colouring gets more expensive the more your chosen hair colour is from your natural hair colour. If you have 100% grey hair coverage, the darker the hair colour you choose the greater the re-growth. Also if your hair is still quite brown and you want to go lighter than this will be very high maintenance! If you are a busy person, on a budget or travel a lot than it is advised for you to stick to your natural colour.

5 Ways to keep the Home Warm in the Colder Months

homeEveryone needs to be able to keep warm in winter but how do you keep your home warm in the colder months? Many Australian homes are designed for the hot climate and it can be hard to keep your home warm without spending a small fortune on energy bills.

Here are 5 ideas to help you do just that.

Install a Wood Fire Heater

Wood heaters are a cosy source of radiant heat and make spending evenings indoor highly enjoyable. There is a wide range of wood heaters available so you will find something to suit your needs. Barbeques Galore have a great range of sizes and styles to suit most spaces.

When deciding which wood heater to buy it is a good idea to talk to the retailer about the size of the space you wish to heat. Ask for advice on what size heater you will need and choose one you find aesthetically pleasing. It’s not a good idea to buy a wood heater that is larger than your needs as you will use more fuel than necessary to heat your space. You will also need to clean your wood heater out from time to time to remove ash and charcoal, so it’s best to get one the right size for your room to avoid unnecessary cleaning.

A wood heater will add to the interior design of your home and should be placed in your most used area, usually the living room. A wood heater will often really enhance the ambience of a room and encourage families to relax and enjoy sitting around the firetogether.

Keep the Heat in with Curtains

Glass windows will allow the heat to escape from inside and will also let the outside cold in. Up to 40 per cent of household heat can escape through uncovered windows, so it’s a good idea to hang reasonably heavy curtains for the cold months.

Insulation

Insulation is a must if you want to save energy keeping your house both warm and cool. If a house is correctly insulated you will save significantly on power costs for heating and cooling.

Seal up the Cracks

Cracks and gaps, including gaps under doors, can be responsible for a whopping 25 per cent heat loss in your home. Use weather stripping around doors and windows and a gap filler to seal any cracks in the walls. An old fashioned door snake will keep the cold from escaping under the door.

Also, close off any rooms that you aren’t using. If you have your wood fire burning in the living room, close off empty rooms to keep the heat in the area of the house you are using.

Let the Sun Shine In

During the day let us much sun into your home as you can. Open the curtains wide and let the sun shine in to warm your home. Remember to close curtains and seal off gaps before dark sets in.

Door to Door: Top Tips for Moving to a New Home

Door to Door Top Tips for Moving to a New HomeKnock, knock. Who’s there? It’s time to move. This is often one of the most stressful times in a person’s life, because moving involves gathering up all of your personal belongings and physically moving them. There’s a good chance you’ll end up losing something, breaking something else, and there’s even the possibility that all of your stuff could be destroyed. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way if you take the time to prepare for your move.

Pack Up Everything Yourself

One of the best ways to ensure that all of your stuff makes it to where it’s going is to pack it yourself. Yes, this takes a lot more effort. It’s also a lot more time-consuming. But, at the end of it, you’ll know that the job is done right.

Most moving companies that have packing services aren’t as careful with your stuff as you’d be, and that makes sense if you think about it. It’s not their stuff. They’re not going to care about it as much as you do.

Label Everything and Take an Inventory

When you pack up your belongings, label everything. Take an extensive inventory and use a spreadsheet so that you have good documentation. Take photos, and even take the time to document the tiny details like how many pairs of socks you have.

This will make it a lot easier to keep track of your belongings when you’re ready to load them up, as well as when you move in. You can be sure everything made it to where it’s supposed to be. It’s also good for those times when you have to make an insurance claim for lost or damaged items.

Compare Written In-Home Estimates

Get the moving company to come out to your home. Don’t trust over-the-phone estimates. They’re never correct anyway. Most moving companies will charge either by weight or by volume. Ask for a quote based on both and go with the cheapest one. But, get your estimate in writing and ask about what could negatively affect the price between now and the time you’re ready to move.

Buy The Insurance

Get moving insurance. Some companies will offer it to you, but will advise you that it’s really not necessary. it is. Even if it costs you an additional $500, the standard insurance that comes with all moving jobs will only compensate you mere cents on the dollar for anything that’s lost or stolen. You want replacement value. If you’re unsure where to look for insurance, comb through top selling real estate agents, talk to your current insurance broker, or ask family or friends for referrals.

Don’t Forget About Your Pets

Your pets need to move too. So, don’t forget Fido’s crate, all his creature comforts, and don’t forget that animals often don’t like change. This is going to be a very confusing time for your pet. Make the transition as smooth as possible. You’re not going to want to pack up any of its belongings before you’re ready to move, and it’s always a good idea to take your dog with you to the new place and spend some time sniffing around.

Prep The New Home

Prepare your new home for your arrival. That means paint and clean the home before anything is moved in. It’s easier to do it now than wait for the furniture and all your belongings to arrive.

Ladies Days Prove Popular

ladies

Racecourses throughout the UK are adding more Ladies Days to their calendars as the events are proving very popular on the fixtures lists in horse racing.

The events tend to offer a reduced admission fee for ladies looking to attend a day at the races.

Along with the regular card, a range of different activities take place at the track which encourage interaction with the public. A best dressed prize is given to one lucky spectator, while a number of fashion shows take place between the contests on the course.

The most popular Ladies Days are at the big meetings in the sport but there are more than 60 each year in the UK alone. In March, the second day at the Cheltenham Festival attracts huge crowds as it is also very popular with people from Ireland. There is also a Ladies Day a month later during the Grand National Meeting. It takes place a day before the world famous steeplechase and also attracts a bumper attendance.

During the flat season, Royal Ascot is well known for its Ladies Day. The dress code at this meeting is strict as everybody on course has to wear a hat and follow specific guidelines to what they can wear. Those in attendance get a glimpse of the Queen as she makes her way down the racecourse in a horse and carriage before racing gets underway.

In the summer, there are a number of meetings which host evening events. They look to book an artist or band to perform after the racing finishes to extend the fun late into the early hours. Families are also able to take children with them as there are designated areas of the course which are alcohol free.

TV Subscriber Networks Deliver the Goods

tv

Originally, there were only a few networks on broadcast TV. Viewers had very limited choices, but at least television service was free. As time went on, however, the public began craving more variety in the types of shows they could watch. More channels were created, and cable and satellite TV came along as a means of delivering these channels to consumers. Of course, not all cable channels are created equal. Some, like HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and Starz, offer premium programming at a premium price. When these networks first came to be, they struggled for a while to define the type of programming that they should deliver. Though they were originally used to televise hit movies to their subscribers, these channels have gradually been creating more and more original programming. These days, the content produced by some of the premium networks is among the best on TV, as is proven time and again by such indicators as ratings and awards shows.

The first real pioneer of original programming on subscriber networks was HBO. In the 1990s, it began broadcasting original series that became very popular, including The Larry Sanders Show, Oz, and Sex and the City. These programs were able to be unique because the cable network was much less strict about issues like profanity, violence, and nudity—all of which would have kept these shows off regular network TV. The success of some of these original programs spawned more series from HBO including The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Entourage, and more. In addition to regular series, HBO also pioneered the concept of the long-form miniseries with its multi-part TV movies like From the Earth to the Moon, Band of Brothers, and John Adams. The network was able to work with big names in Hollywood (like Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg) to create stories that couldn’t be told in the form of usual movies due to time and budget constraints. Today, some of the most popular TV programming that still draws in viewers to HBO include series like Girls, True Blood, Game of Thrones, and Boardwalk Empire.

After HBO began to be successful with its original programming, several of the other subscriber networks took notice and began to produce new programming of their own. Showtime gained new viewers with its early series, which included The Outer Limits and Queer as Folk. Over the years, it has continued to produce successful long-running programs like Weeds, The Big C, and The L Word. Current hits on Showtime include Dexter, Californication, and the winner of the 2012 Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, Homeland.

While Starz and Cinemax lag behind the other premium networks when it comes to original programming, they have both taken successful stabs at creating their own shows. Spartacus ran for several years on Starz, and the network has a long list of shows currently in development to be launched in the next few years. Cinemax has focused most of its original programming on the adult genre, and its programs like Co-Ed Confidential, Lingerie, and Life on Top have all had long runs. If the programming from any of these networks interests you, but you currently don’t receive the channels, you might want to learn more about getting them through DirecTV from a dish network site.

There is no “lightning in a bottle” secret about what makes some of the original programming on premium channels work so well. The networks have simply found a formula that works. By convincing subscribers to pay for their content, these networks have been able to put more money into creating quality programming. The resulting quality programming cyclically attracts new subscribers. If you are fed up with some of the programs currently being aired on network TV and basic cable, turning to the content produced by these subscriber networks might be a perfect new way for you to get the most out of your TV viewing experience.
